Nick Soudnick - Akhe Music Vol. 5 Faust ³ (Ultra)
Produced as the soundtrack for the theatre performance of "Faust ³" by Akhe, this work by Nick Soundnick seems him welding the industrial clamor of Vetrophonia to avant-garde classical music. Actual string and bass instruments are accompanied by metallic percussion and discreet electronic effects for a majestic result with a masterful sense of tension and release, with tracks ranging from high-cadence orchestrations to more restrained and atmospheric passages. Leagues above whatever similar attempts at this exercise have been made in the industrial scene.

Maurizio Bianchi & Atrax Morgue - M. Plus T. (Silentes)
The last recorded material from Marco Corbelli comes in the shape of this collaboration with Maurizio Bianchi. The two long and life-draining tape loop dirges presented here betray a morbid serenity further emphasized by their faded melodic elements and stop/start editing. While "No More" is a more representative epitaph for Atrax Morgue, this is nevertheless a logical collaboration that has sadly become a final statement.

Inspired by Lionel Tran's novel "Traverser du Desert" and involving a number of other artistic contributions such as the calligraphy of Thomas Foucher and the photography of Jean-Marie Arnouil, "Traverser" is a beautifully presented journey across a scorched desert where daytime mirages cede only to the night's icy winds.

The crystalline recording quality strongly emphasizes the timber and tone of each sound source, bringing to mind some of the more subdued A.B.G.S. material.

Mattias Frisk - Ett Liv I Vantan Pa Doden (Self-released)
Second part of what is announced as a trilogy of releases by Swedish artist Mattias Frisk, whose eerie and colorful paintings and collages are just as attention-worthy as his musical output.
Exploring the themes of "time, death and apathy", this second chapter shifts to slower and more dispiriting sounds, with gloomy piano melodies and ghostly drones pierced by brittle noise shards. Solemn and somber like it should be, this definitely comes highly recommended. Packaged like the first volume in an envelope with a hand-written letter in Swedish.

Urna - Liber Lelle (Abgurd)
New 2008 release from long-active Italian artist Gianluca Martucci, with a number of past releases on Slaughter Productions. Gradually stepping away from its dank death industrial origins towards more ritualistic and luminous sounds over the years, Urna's new work further confirms this evolution with its compositions of serene acoustic ambient. Bells, cymbals, percussion, mandolin, balalaika, zither, accordion and flutes are woven together into a lustrous tapestry of sound dedicated to the life and death of Angela da Foligno, a Christian author, nun, and mystic. This could easily be a White Magic audio counterpart to Endura's "Black Eden".

Nikita Golyshev - Solaris (Monochrome Vision)
Debut CD album from Nikita Golyshev, a Moscow artist also known for his many mp3 releases as CD-R. "Solaris" comes in the shape of two long deep ambient pieces with perpetually expanding drones and minimal melodic tones. These tracks were partially presented at the Add Noise II festival on May 15th, 2007.

While this sort of exercise usually gathers leftovers that prove only interesting to completists, O Paradis' level of work makes this collection a release that can definitely stand on its own merit.

Jazkamer - Balls The Size Of Texas, Liver The Size Of Brazil (Purple Soil)
While the prolific duo of John Hegre and Lasse Marhaug is mostly known for its taxing brand of harsh noise and glitch-happy deconstructions, this 2007 release on Czech label Purple Soil proves to be much more affable than their past works would have suggested. Sure, there is an electronic storm of a piece somewhere on here that's guaranteed to have you jumping for the volume knob, and the first track is basically little more than an old medical report apparently found on vinyl, but the real attraction here is to be found on the tracks which rely on a strangely western-tinged blend of guitar noise. The drawn-out squalls and piercing feedback become sorrowful ballads for desert sunrises and midnight prairies, the sort better seen when the whiskey kicks in. In those moments of grace, everything else just fades away.

Svasti-Ayanam - Sanklesa (Eternal Pride)
Label info: "Svasti-ayanam is Peter Andersson's foray into dark, Tibetan-Nepalese ambience. Cloama & Blutleuchte - From Wasteland Mausoleums (New Old Sentinel)
Stunning collaboration release between those two Finnish projects. Cloama's lurch towards more experimental sounds from its power electronics / noise beginnings is further emphasized by Die Blutleuchte's contributions, and this release effortlessly shifts from post-apocalyptic mantras to doom jazz dirges, with distorted guitar melodies and bleak atmospheres thrown in between. Scrapyard shamanism at its best. On a side-note, be sure to also look into Die Blutleuchte's "Rus", a sonic overview of Russian military history.

Halo Manash - Language of Red Goats (Aural Hypnox)
New 2008 release from Aural Hypnox's spearhead project. "Language of Red Goats" sets aside the intricate textures of previous releases for a stripped-down and primal approach, relying mostly on reverberating gongs, bells and various acoustic sounds to form the backbone of this album. In lesser hands, this could be a recipe for dull listening, but the 3 long flowing tracks presented here make for an absorbing session of ritualistic music done right.

Re-release of the 1998 EEs'T Records CD, which itself was a re-release of the 1982 LP of the same name with an extra track that was on the "Fur Ilse Koch" compilation on Susan Lawly. Old-school MB at his best.

Krepulec - New Radical (Beast of Prey)
Krepulec is a duo involving the head of the Beast of Prey label and the person behind Horologium. While they have released a number of splits and EPs, this is their first full-length album and it's the same blend of martial rhythms, neo-folk and subdued industrial influences as on their previous discs. A note-worthy aspect of this album is the recurrent use of accordions, which adds a nice nostalgic touch to its sound.

Genetic Transmission - Ascetic (Beast of Prey)
New album from this absurdly overlooked Polish industrial pioneer, whose previous work includes many self-releases on Die Schone Blumen Musik Werk and activities in projects such as Ładne Kwiatki, Godzilla and Hated Bruit Kollectiv. "Ascetic" is just as abstract and demanding as one would expect, with its brittle electro-acoustic textures slithering and scraping through three 20-min tracks. An acquired taste for some, but those interested in Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar and modern futurism shouldn't ignore this one.

Desolation Zone - L'Homme Machine (Beast of Prey)
"L'Homme Machine" is named after a book by French philosopher Julien Offray de La Mettrie, the founder of a radical form of materialism he named mechanism. The six tracks presented here live up to this creed by delivering a solid 38 minutes of cadenced factory noises, mechanical rhythms and instructions barked over the factory's PA systems, like a more electronic and rhythmical version of some Linija Mass or Genetic Transmission tracks. Great stuff.

Ishai Adar - Beaufort Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Ak Duck)
Original soundtrack to "Beaufort", the 2007 Berlinale Film Festival Silver Bear winner for best director. "Beaufort" tells the story of the last group of IDF soldiers stationed in the South Lebanon outpost of the same name, prior to the evacuation of Israeli forces from the country in 2000.
Its soundtrack was composed by Israeli electronic artist Ishai Adar, who was previously involved in the experimental pop band "The Top-Hat Carriers". This is Adar's second motion picture soundtrack, and it's an ominous and pensive combination of processed digital sounds, warm ambient drones and sedated melodies. The press release suggests comparisons to Philip Jack, Biosphere & William Basinski, but this comes recommended to anyone looking for a great example of a subtle contemporary electronic score.

Hollowing & Maor Appelbaum - Collaborating Torture (Topheth Prophet / Heart & Crossbone)
One monolithic 54 min track of spectral ambience courtesy of Israeli musician Maor Appelbaum (Poochlatz, Vultures) and the late Matt Gibney (AKA Hollowing, So I Had To Shoot Him and owner of the Rectrix label). Those of you who picked up his collaboration with Chaos as Shelter which we released back in 2005 should definitely look into this.

Second album from Barzel, fueled as always by the cause of militant Zionism. Whereas the first album felt like a historical overview of the topic (complete with sampled excerpts from documentaries and political speeches), "Born to Destroy Amalek" is much more aggressive, confrontational and personal, like stepping into the mind of a Hebron settler clutching his M-16. The emphasis on more ferocious vocals and heavy power electronics drives this point across, with samples of threats of violence becoming vengeful mantras. Beneath the Biblical references of the titles, the antagonism is real. This is the sound of unforgiving siege mentality, for those who can stomach it.

Cisfinitum - Tactio [mn033] (Mechanoise Labs)
With a parsimonious discography mostly released on seasoned Russian labels such as Waystyx, Ewers Tonkunst and Monochrome Vision, Evgeny Voronovsky has established himself as an uniquely engaging artist in the country's current ambient scene. Under the name of Cisfinitum, he has taken a syncretic approach to an often codified genre, uniting his formal training as a violinist at the Moscow State University with his affinity for concrete sounds and experimental structures. Past releases have shown a capacity to synthesize these factors at times while emphasizing the contrasts between them at others, sometimes over the course of a single track. In this aspect, this album follows the tradition faithfully.
Tactio is the live recording of a Cisfinitum concert at the St. Petri Dom (St. Peter's Cathedral) in Bremen, on November 24, 2005. The particular (and as expected highly favorable) acoustics of this environment were consistently used not only as an enhancing effect but as an integral foundation for the performance, making it unmistakeably tied to its context. Presented in the form of six continuous tracks, the album is a contemplative composition of vibrant drones, reverberating bells and synthesized resonance, gracefully evolving from the celestial tones of its start to the tellurian pulses of its climax. This is a piece of work that is elaborate in its simplicity, and it's with much appreciation that it is presented here today. The beautiful iconic artwork by Evgeny Kuprienko further emphasizes the relic-like qualities of this recording.

Disarmingly touching music for those windy yet sunny days.

Invisible Front - Interferences And Time (Indie-ziert)
Appropriately subtitled "Kampf auf allen Frequenzen", the debut release by this Berlin-based unit chooses the radio as its key subject matter and explores its impact as the first major mass communication tool of the 20th century. As expected, this translates into samples of number stations, historical radio speeches and general shortwave chatter providing a backdrop for overdriven synthetic tones and crackling (yet controlled) noise. The less agitated moments bring to mind SRP's "Schriever Rundflugzeug Projekt" and other Membrum Debile Propaganda releases, but overall this album is much more abrasive than initially hinted at. A struggle on all frequencies indeed.

O Paradis - Cuando el Tiempo Sopla (Punch Records)
A new album's worth of beautiful and melancholic tunes from Barcelona's O Paradis. The tone is sorrowful and nostalgic, with the passing of time serving as a constant theme throughout the album (I don't think I'm imagining those tick-tocking rhythms). Definitely a step away from the more upbeat collaborations with Novy Svet and even more unusual in some ways than "La Boca del Infierno" ("Desnuda" will certainly mess with you), this is another excellent release from O Paradis that's rightfully been released by Punch Records.

Erik Ursich - Electronic Diffraction Patterns (Punch Records)
Setting aside the 70's synth LP vibe of his first album for another trip back in time to the raw electronic sounds of the 50's, Erik Ursich's new exercise in style is much less musical in nature and focusses more on the sounds themselves. Sounds of vintage analog synthesizers which come across as an homage to Louis and Bebe Barron's ground-breaking soundtrack to "Forbidden Planet", with melody and rhythm shunned in favor of texture, timbre and atonality over the course of this album's 5 long tracks. Highly recommended to those into early synth experimentation and bleeps and bloops. The CD includes a video which can be viewed on PCs.

Kryptogen Rundfunk & Hladna - Rokton & Formanta (Zhelezobeton)
Label info: "Hladna and Kryptogen Rundfunk - behind these names stand two St. Petersburg-based musicians playing experimental noise music. They both nourish a tender passion for old electronic instruments and often use them at their concerts and on recordings. One warm sunny day they gathered and decided to play on two analogue rhythm synthesizers "Rokton" and "Formanta". These are actually two identical instruments which were produced in the Soviet Union by two different factories. Each of them is the "brain" for electronic drum-kit, but can also be used separately - as a multi-channel tone-noise-generator or rhytm-machine.
Kryptogen Rundfunk used his device smoothly, evenly and calmly while Hladna expelled from his more sharp and unpredictable sounds. Worth mentioning are Hladna's non-standard ways of making sound - on the last two tracks he opened the back plate of his synth and played not only using knobs but also getting inside and abridging contacts with his own hands (for which he was incidentally struck by the current a couple of times).
Live recording without any processing, with all it's natural crackles and tasty overloads. Abstract electronics, minimalism and a little noise."

Mattias Frisk is a graphic artist whose collaboration with fellow Swedes Altar of Flies and Gjalp was released not too long ago on Nil By Mouth. This 29-min debut solo release is a wonderfully strange collage of sputtering noise, acoustic pop music and bird songs. Overall, this is an imaginative piece of work that definitely warrants keeping an eye out his future releases. The presentation is equally unusual, as the CD-R comes inside a sealed envelope addressed to Mattias Frisk with a hand-written letter in Swedish and a color insert.

Label info: "Light Of Shipwreck is a one-man band operated by Ben Fleury-Steiner, a Deleware-based drone artist and owner of the excellent Gears of Sand Recordings imprint, which has released discs from some of our favorite ambient/drone/drift artists including Encomiast, Cordell Klier, and Aidan Baker. It was actually through Aidan Baker that we found out about Ben's Light Of Shipwreck project; knowing that we're fanatics for "heavy ambient" sound, Light Of Shipwreck was recommended as something we should check out. At first expecting something more along the lines of the kind of floating ambient rumble that marks so much of my favorite Baker solo stuff, I was pleasantly surprised by how percussive the tracks I heard online from LOS were, the dense, ominous feedback drones and heavy rumbling ur-riffs floating freely over a mechanistic tribal-rhythm freakout. We ended up gettin g in touch with Ben from Light Of Shipwreck and it turned out that he had a nearly hour-long disc that he wanted to have released through our Crucial Bliss imprint, and here we are: a three-track full length of rich, crushing power-ambient, titled From The Idle Cylinders, a reference to the American Objectivist poet George Oppen whose work is a consistent influence on Light Of Shipwreck's imagery, with huge slabs of resonant sheet metal shimmering in an ocean of heavenly feedback and reverberating guitar drone, and surges of droning tribal Krautrock percussion floating along with distorted ambient doom power chords and washed out vocal cord bliss, each track running upwards of 20 minutes in length. A totally breathtaking piece of music, like Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Can, and Earth swirled together into an austere, hypnotizing heavy-trance masterpiece. [...]"

While heavily influenced by a number of CMI acts (the Protagonist in particular) and not particularly distinguishable from its peers in this field, the album is rather well executed and efficient at what it sets out to achieve.

The label's signature analog electronics compact Subliminal's machine noise and aggressive vocals into a stark and focussed charge of pure hatred, the sort not heard of on Galakthorr� since Blut. This is another one of those CDs meant to be played in shuffle mode, with the main longer tracks followed by a large number of shorter ones. The longer pieces are in the cut-up / experimental vein with lots of found sounds while the short tracks are mostly random goofy samples.

After coming across his collaboration CD-R with Kivel�, the search was on for more material from this new project from Finland. Clergy of Oneiros is the debut CD from Somnivore and has the same ethereal yet richly detailed sound as the above mentioned CD-R, with its meditative drones, ghostly vocals and slightly noisier percussive loops co-existing in a dim and distant state.

Somnivore & Kivel� - Maelstr�m (New Old Sentinel)
Free-form dark ambient from Finland that wouldn't be out of place on the Aural Hypnox roster, even if this does have slightly more industrial than purely ambient undertones.
The mid-range frequencies require a decent pair of headphones to be fully appreciated and the lack of track markers might initially put one off from sitting down for the full 47 minutes, but Maelstr�m is a finely crafted piece of work that renews its sound palette regularly enough to keep your attention throughout its duration. A great pick for those late-night listening sessions.

Leaving aside their Wall Street portfolios and the corporate world for a second, Cyclotimia bring us an album of cosmic-themed IDM-ish ambient (not too far from Bad Sector's Kosmodrom) that is actually going to be sent to space soon. Here, read it for yourself: "Through an arrangement with U.S. aerospace company Space Services Inc. and its subsidiary Celestis Inc., a copy of this album will be incorporated into a payload that is scheduled for flight to space aboard a powerful rocket. Cyclotimia has been named the official musical group for Celestis' Legacy Flight."

Dvar - Jraah Mraah (Gravitator Records)
The mysterious creatures of Dvar are back with a whole new repertoire of otherworldly songs and playful little ditties. Thankfully not much has changed since the last time, and "Jraah Mraah" has the same hobgoblin-like vocals and impish melodies that make every one of their albums a fairy tale for the ears, keeping with the oral tradition that is essential to the genre. There's one key difference though: the tale is no longer being told from the point of view of an omniscient narrator in your language, but directly by the gnomes, trolls and pixies themselves in theirs. Wonderfully enchanting as always.

Lieutenant Caramel - Early Tape Works (Monochrome Vision)
Label info: "Lieutenant Caramel is the artistic alter ego of french musician Philippe Blanchard, known also under Denier Du Culte, Pierre Bouchet and Felipe Caramelos monikers. His albums were released by Old Europa Cafe, Music For Consciousness Rape, Metamkine, Plate Lunch, Dedali Opera and Edition Suicide Commercial. He was the founder of Acteon and Studio Forum labels, as well of yearly festival Bruit de la Neige ("Noise of the snow") devoted to the memory and legacy of the legendary futurist Luigi Russolo, who was the author of noise music idea and manifesto.
Travelling the world, he collects the resonant matters at the time of his journeys (Syria, Iran, Rome, Venice, Madrid, Sarmakande, Roumania, Moscow, St Petersbourg etc). He have won several international prizes - GMEB in Bourges, Radio France, The Muse in Circuit (Mauricio Kagel), CIMES-FICS in Prague. Recently, he is back to studio again, working on the new album. Meanwhile, we are proud to present his first works from the mid 80s, appearing in digital format for the first time: "Apr�s les horreurs, suit naturellement la beaut�"!"

Frank Rothkamm - Moers Works (1982 - 1984) (Monochrome Vision)
Old-school industrial experimentations recorded between 1982 and 1984 by Frank Rothkamm, a professionally trained musician who used to release his material on his own Flux Records label. Somewhere between tape collage, free-form ambient noise and chamber music, at times reminiscent of some instrumental Maria Zerfall tracks.

Tapio Kotkavuori - Terra Hyperborea (Gemina Stella)
Label info: "Musically the artist himself describes Terra Hyperborea as "post-apocalyptic dark-ethno-ambient". Its semi-organic, semi-electric soundspheres are trance-inducing, almost hypnotic, varying from soft mood adjustments to more focused incantations and chants. Kotkavuori's main weapon of choice in this battle against silence is the didgeridoo, but tons of other instruments - such as vocals, rainsticks, shaman drums, coffee maker, synthesizers, kitchen knives etc. - have been used as well. Moljebka Pulse - Sadalsuud (Some Place Else)
Label info: "Mathias Josefson is a sound-artist from Stockholm, Sweden, and currently attending the royal university college of fine arts. His main project is Moljebka Pvlse, which is an experimental music group that works with both electronic and acoustic instruments, as well as with field recordings and found sounds. What comes out is hypnotic and meditative soundscapes.[...]
The name Sadalsuud refers to a star of the same name in the constellation of Aquarius. The name comes from an Arabic phrase meaning "the luckiest of them all". Nevertheless the album is rather earthy-sounding, yet mystical and surreal, almost claustrophobic at times. The sound is vaguely reminiscent of some works by Nurse With Wound, Maeror Tri or The Hafler Trio, but carries the trademark Moljebka Pvlse feel. [...]"
