With help from Evgeny Voronovsky of Cisfinitum and an arsenal of vintage Russian analogue synthesizers, Dmitry Zubov creates the sort of hazy, ethereal atmospheres propelled by cyclical rhythms that wouldn't be out of place next to some Tangerine Dream tracks or the earlier and more sedated Deutsch Nepal pieces. Mellow yet compelling ambient that soothes the mind. (CD, digisleeve, $14.00) Aidan Baker & The Infant Cycle - Rural Sprawl (Zhelezobeton) Label info: "Canadian musicians Aidan Baker and Jim DeJong (aka The Infant Cycle) have used the "gentleman's kit" of modern experimenters for creating the compositions of this disk: guitar, bass, tapes, samples, feedback generator and thumb piano. The four album tracks correspond with the four seasons, the four states of the soul... [...] The first two tracks were recorded in 2001 (and released on CD-R by the Italian label Blade Records in 2002 in a very limited edition), two others were recorded in 2005 and thus completed the natural cycle of this album." (pro-printed CD-R and cardboard sleeve, $11.00) Cyclotimia - Music For Stockmarkets (Zhelezobeton) I'll stick to the press release for this one because it perfectly captures everything that needs to be said about the CD. More relevant now than ever. Label info: Cyclotimia is most probably the only project in the world which has chosen the creation of a soundtrack to "globalization" and life in the "consumer society" as their concept. The project members more than anyone else are immersed into the magic of finance and their creative intuition allowed them to compose the main part of "Music for Stockmarkets" with its unforgivingly precise name "Wall Street Requiem". Today the whole civilized world is listening to this requiem, the first cords of which were played in Wall Street itself. The "Music for Stockmarkets" album with its radically experimental nature stands out in the extensive discography of this Moscow project. The 64-minute album includes 32 tracks divided into three conceptual parts: "Wallstreet Requiem" (25 minutes, recorded in 2004-2007), "Trivial Pleasures" (26 minutes, recorded in 2002, this part was the only one released as a separate CD in 2003) and "Financial Glossary" (13 minutes, recorded in 2003). The material itself is nothing like the one heard in the previous records of Cyclotimia. There are no apocalyptic soundscapes of "Wasteland" times, no cybernetic hi-tech and media madness of "E$chaton", no cosmic downtempo of "Celestis: Space Ceremonial Music"... Minimalism, academic sterility, surgical accuracy and meditative ataraxia prevail on "Music for Stockmarkets". Then again it is not the familiar "IDM", "glitch", "noise", "clicks and cuts" and not "minimal techno"... The sound of the album is crystal-clear and warm at the same time. "Vintage" lovers have a wonderful chance to listen to the masterpieces of Soviet music production (such as Rhythm 1, Rhythm 2, Aelita, Formanta UDS, Formanta EMS-01, Polyvox) in pure sound, unprocessed by effects. (CD, digipak, $14.00) Inade - The Incarnation Of The Solar Architects (Loki Foundation) With their 5th full-length album, Inade have reached a new threshold in their synthesis of the esoteric and the cosmic. Easily one of their most accomplished releases of recent memory, "The Incarnation of the Solar Architects" is a compass to the transcendental nature of the universe, the world that towers above ours. The sheer vastness of the soundscapes captures the primordial dread that comes with this awareness, no matter how jaded one may think himself to be. Forget "dark", this is aeonian ambient of the highest stature. (CD, 6-panel digipak, $18.00) Bad Sector - CMASA (Power & Steel) New 2009 album that reworks material originally composed in 2005 for the M3M art exhibition in Pisa, Italy. The exhibition in question being based around images of the seaside and rivers of the Pisana area and the CMASA airplane factory located there, those themes carry over into the compositions through subtle sounds of the seashore, rushing water and sparse metal clanging. With that context in mind, this is some of Massimo Magrini's most emotional work as his unique digital textures take a particularly melodic character here, which is further reinforced by the beautifully lush synth pads. Vital in every sense of the word. (CD, digipak, $18.00) S.E.T.I. - Corona (Power & Steel) Fifth album from Andrew Lagowski's deep space exploration project, S.E.T.I. Active since 1982, Lagowski has notably collaborated with Lustmord on one-off projects such as Terror Against Terror and Isolrubin BK, and his own solo work includes material released as Legion and under his own name. Of all his albums as S.E.T.I., 1994's "Knowledge" has always been a personal top pick, and remains even today among the best sonic attempts at evoking the vastness of the cosmos (and for $4 at Soleilmoon, there is really no reason why you shouldn't pick up a copy right now). "Corona" is the rightful follow-up to it, as it reuses and improves on a lot of the same elements: deep cosmic drones, sputtering digital oscillations, NASA recordings, cut-up radio broadcasts and harmonic waves are all forged together into a richly-detailed 52-min journey to the beyond. Ad Astra! (CD, clear jewel case, $18.00) Internal Fusion - Tribute To Hastia (Lucioleditions) With a sparse discography on Desaccord Majeur, Staalplaat and various Taalem-related labels, Internal Fusion has become mostly known for its sound somewhere between Rapoon and Muslimgauze, with various sorts of percussions providing a rhythmical backdrop to most of its work. This new release however definitely moves away from that area and towards minimalist dark ambient, with deep low-end pulses and restrained drones becoming the main driving force for the 6 long tracks gathered here. That said, they're composed with enough imagination and grace so as to remain worthy of attention and not an exercise in reverb-drenched nothingness. Quality stuff. (CD, transparent slim DVD case, $16.00) Subliminal - Look At The Creation (Galakthorro) It's been already 3 years since Subliminal last released "Coping", but at least we now have the 4 tracks on this 7" to follow up on that. Raw, poisonous power electronics with Albert Fisch's signature mangled vocals. One copy per buyer and only available if bought with a Galakthorro CD. (7", $20.00) Herz Juhning - Miasma (Galakthorro) First full-length album from this newcomer to the Galakthorro family, whose Faces 7" the luckier ones of you may have had a chance to hear. True to the label's tradition, Herz Juhning delivers a compact dose of stylized dread that navigates somewhere between November Novelet's pulsating angst-pop ("Reopened Eyes") and Subliminal's dreary analog power electronics ("The Rape", "Infibulation"). No surprises, no gimmicks, just 13 solid tracks of torpor and contempt. (CD, digipak with 16-page booklet, $20.00) Cloama & Die Blutleuchte - Cloama & Die Blutleuchte (Anima Arctica) CD reprint of the 2005 collaboration CD-R originally released by New Old Sentinel. If the psychedelic industrial / baroque experimental nature of their other release together ("From Wasteland Mausoleums") caught your attention, you will not want to miss this. Incantations for the twilight hours. Yog-Sothoth is the key. (CD, clear jewel case, 12-page booklet, $13.50) Hated Bruit Kollektiv - Aktion One (New Nihilism) Hated Bruit Kollektiv is the name for the ephemeral collaborative project between Rafal Sadej (Moan) and Tomasz Twardawa (Genetic Transmission), two of Poland's better artists operating in the post-industrial domain. This release captures their live performance at the 2007 Bez Kontroli Festival, and it's presented here in the shape of 37-min stream-of-consciousness maelstrom of whirring, clanging and heavily textured noise. Not the "harsh noise" pedal mashing variety that is, this is much more atmospheric and shifting in nature, with certain moments bringing to mind the more subdued material they release under their own main projects. (Pro-printed CD-R in folded A2 poster sleeve, $12.50) Per Aspera - Nil Desperandum (New Nihilism) Surprisingly glossy if uneven dark ambient from this newcomer to the Polish post-industrial scene. The better tracks tracks are built around deep drones and choir-like processed voices that succeed at giving the whole affair a stark cinematic tone that falls somewhere between Parca Pace and Band of Pain. Some specific pieces ("Crematorium" and "Shkiyat Hoolam") gradually incorporate samples of 9/11 witness accounts, Israeli news snippets and Arabic chanting and instrumentation in a fairly clumsy manner (the unintentionally hilarious homemade "jihadist death threat" is straight out of some cheesy Golan-Globus production, complete with a misnamed "Radaman" reference). Aside from that distracting break in continuity (which can still be enjoyed for its sheer tackiness), "Nil Desperandum" achieves what it set out to do in terms of quality ambient. Machine noise and processed radio signals that have a trance-like quality to them. Limited to 120 hand-numbered copies. (CD-R, cardboard sleeve, $12.00) T.A.U. - T.A.U. (Ultra) First self-titled release from this collaboration between Kirill Rozhkov (S36NZ-OKH) and Alexander Lebedev-Frontov (whom you should already know of by the time you're reading this). Where Linija Mass is the sound of industrial labor running at full capacity, T.A.U.'s debut album is its nighttime counterpart, with the pacing of the activity subdued and restrained. The shouts of the foreman are ghostly echoes here, and the faint rumble of automated machinery is only interrupted by sparse malfunctions in its cycles. The poetry of machines in motion. (CD-R, cardboard sleeve, $12.00) Lunar Abyss Deus Organum - Snovidenie (BioSonar Labirint) First full-length CD album from the new incarnation of the long-active St Petersburg project known as Lunar Abyss Quartet. The material presented here is in the vein of the Brusnika 7" released on Drone Records and the Sleeping in the Sleep mini-album, with a similarly haunting and ethereal atmosphere. Ritual percussion, traditional Russian folk instruments and field recordings come together to form these incantations for forest spirits over a background of hazy drones and discreet electronics. A personal favorite that comes highly recommended. Each copy comes in a different hand-made cardboard package. (CD, hand-made cardboard sleeve, $14.00) Lunar Abyss Deus Organum - Tuntury (Aquarellist) New 2009 release from St Petersburg's finest purveyor of shamanistic ambient. Psychedelic drones, rustling bells and clear melodic tones are overlaid over natural field recordings of rain, crackling fire and bird calls, but the more animated pace of these 6 tracks makes for an active hallucinatory listening experience rather than a strictly laid-back "ambient" affair. For this release, Evgeny Savenko was joined by M.M. of Zhelezobeton / Kryptogen Rundfunk on processed guitars, synths and tapes. (CD, digisleeve, $14.00) Linija Mass - Industrealism (ALF Produkt) Mini-album composed of two tracks from 2001 and one from 2007. This is some of the most rhythmical and loop-based material released by Linija Mass, mechanical grinding and the restrained hum of machinery replacing the maelstrom of factory noise present on earlier releases. A different direction approached with the project's consistent stakhanovist efficiency. (3"CD in oversized sleeve, $12.00) Dvar - Jraah Mraah (Gravitator Records) The mysterious creatures of Dvar are back with a whole new repertoire of otherworldly songs and playful little ditties. Thankfully not much has changed since the last time, and "Jraah Mraah" has the same hobgoblin-like vocals and impish melodies that make every one of their albums a fairy tale for the ears, keeping with the oral tradition that is essential to the genre. There's one key difference though: the tale is no longer being told from the point of view of an omniscient narrator in your language, but directly by the gnomes, trolls and pixies themselves in theirs. Wonderfully enchanting as always. (CD, clear jewel case, $14.00, last copy) Dvar - Rakhilim (Monopoly) A personal favorite and definitely an acquired taste, Dvar is a mysterious Russian band that makes music ideally suited for drunken gnomes and overworked elves, complete with otherworldly vocals and cartoon-ish melodies. Hysterically joyful at times, desperately melancholic at others, Dvar is always completely off the charts in the best way possible and this is definitely one of their highest points so far. (CD, clear jewel case, $13.00) Bad Sector - The Harrow (Ewers Tonkunst) Re-release of this classic Bad Sector album from 2001 in a slick digisleeve. Based on sounds emanating from a digital Geiger counter and naval, air and military radio bands fed through custom signal processing, "The Harrow" is just as impressive today as when it was initially released, with its streams of radiant signals and impulsive electronic patterns. Absolutely essential. (CD, digisleeve, $14.50) Various Artists - Sacral Symphony (EE Tapes) 5 exclusive and long-playing tracks curated by Evgeny Voronovski of Cisfinitum for this great yet discreet Belgian label. The contributors are 1000sch�en, Troum, Rapoon, First Human Ferro and Cisfinitum himself. Also features great artwork by Eugeny Kuprienko, who also took care of the design for Cisfinitum's "Tactio". (CD, oversized screen-printed sleeve, $16.00) Rapoon - Escaping From Color (Rapoon Recomposed & Remixed) (Quasi Pop Records) 15-track compilation of music exclusively composed with Rapoon's "Tribal Sci Fi" sound library. Participants include Francisco Lopez, Machinefabriek, Troum, Jorge Castro, Aidan Baker, Anla Courtis, Mike Shiflet, Cisfinitum and more. (CD, digisleeve, $13.50) KK Null - Galactic Tornado (Quasi Pop Records) 2008 release from long-active experimental musician Kazuyuki Kishino. While the combination of a prolific discography and the "guitar noise improv" tag kept me away from his works so far as efficiently as the colors on a poison dart frog, my preconceptions were thankfully proved wrong by this album. Far from being interchangeable and self-indulgent, the five 10+ minute tracks here do not show a single moment of dullness. Attention has been obviously paid to keeping the flow dynamic and renewing the pool of sounds, as thick slabs of cosmic noise crash into twitchy electronic pulses and deflagrations. If this is representative of his current work, I'll be definitely investigating more of his similar material. (CD, multi-paneled digipak, $13.50) Job Karma - Tschernobyl (Ars Benevola Mater) This 2007 release from Poland's Job Karma is a concept album based around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and its aftermath. Melancholic synth melodies, minimal rhythmic patterns and layered voice samples are used in the same carefully constructed manner as on 2005's "Strike", and this is definitely a commendable and consistent follow-up to it (barring the somehow off-topic "Man in my Room" with its ridiculous sample from "Saw"). While the hypnotic loops of its immediate parent are carried over, this is a much cruder affair, with no room for ornamental effects or intricate structuring. This is stripped-down blunt-as-bones rhythms repeating themselves with mantra-like insistence. Rewarding in the right state of mind, utterly alienating in other circumstances. (CD, oversized sleeve, $15.00, last copy) Contemplatron - Delog (Wrotycz Records) Sophomore release from this Polish dark ambient project strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. The Tibetan word Delog refers to one who has crossed the threshold of death and returned to tell about it. 45 minutes of serene compositions and ritualistic instrumentations, with an overall tone that would fit somewhere between Exotoendo and Herbst9. Bells, cymbals, percussion, mandolin, balalaika, zither, accordion and flutes are woven together into a lustrous tapestry of sound dedicated to the life and death of Angela da Foligno, a Christian author, nun, and mystic. This could easily be a White Magic audio counterpart to Endura's "Black Eden". (2CD, digipak, $23.00) Jazkamer - Balls The Size Of Texas, Liver The Size Of Brazil (Purple Soil) While the prolific duo of John Hegre and Lasse Marhaug is mostly known for its taxing brand of harsh noise and glitch-happy deconstructions, this 2007 release on Czech label Purple Soil proves to be much more affable than their past works would have suggested. Sure, there is an electronic storm of a piece somewhere on here that's guaranteed to have you jumping for the volume knob, and the first track is basically little more than an old medical report apparently found on vinyl, but the real attraction here is to be found on the tracks which rely on a strangely western-tinged blend of guitar noise. The drawn-out squalls and piercing feedback become sorrowful ballads for desert sunrises and midnight prairies, the sort better seen when the whiskey kicks in. In those moments of grace, everything else just fades away. (CD, multi-paneled booklet, $16.00) Svasti-Ayanam - Sanklesa (Eternal Pride) Label info: "Svasti-ayanam is Peter Andersson's foray into dark, Tibetan-Nepalese ambience. Andersson is well known for his work as Raison D'etre, Atomine Elektrine etc. In this incarnation, his signature Raison D'etre sound has been modified in an incredibly pronounced, and effective way. Sanklesa is marked by strong tribal rhythms that draw the listener into distant, foreign, ritual soundscapes. Andersson has released a prolific catalogue of music, that includes many CD's, limited vinyl and countless compilation appearances. Album includes 2 exclusive bonus-tracks." A note-worthy aspect of this album is the recurrent use of accordions, which adds a nice nostalgic touch to its sound. (CD, oversized sleeve held by a ribbon, 12.00 €) Genetic Transmission - Ascetic (Beast of Prey) New album from this absurdly overlooked Polish industrial pioneer, whose previous work includes many self-releases on Die Schone Blumen Musik Werk and activities in projects such as Ładne Kwiatki, Godzilla and Hated Bruit Kollectiv. "Ascetic" is just as abstract and demanding as one would expect, with its brittle electro-acoustic textures slithering and scraping through three 20-min tracks. An acquired taste for some, but those interested in Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar and modern futurism shouldn't ignore this one. (CD, circular cardboard packaging, 12.00 €) Desolation Zone - L'Homme Machine (Beast of Prey) "L'Homme Machine" is named after a book by French philosopher Julien Offray de La Mettrie, the founder of a radical form of materialism he named mechanism. The six tracks presented here live up to this creed by delivering a solid 38 minutes of cadenced factory noises, mechanical rhythms and instructions barked over the factory's PA systems, like a more electronic and rhythmical version of some Linija Mass or Genetic Transmission tracks. Great stuff. (CD, circular metal case with insert, black latex gloves and scalpel blade, 13.00 €) Ishai Adar - Beaufort Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Ak Duck) Original soundtrack to "Beaufort", the 2007 Berlinale Film Festival Silver Bear winner for best director. "Beaufort" tells the story of the last group of IDF soldiers stationed in the South Lebanon outpost of the same name, prior to the evacuation of Israeli forces from the country in 2000. Its soundtrack was composed by Israeli electronic artist Ishai Adar, who was previously involved in the experimental pop band "The Top-Hat Carriers". This is Adar's second motion picture soundtrack, and it's an ominous and pensive combination of processed digital sounds, warm ambient drones and sedated melodies. The press release suggests comparisons to Philip Jack, Biosphere & William Basinski, but this comes recommended to anyone looking for a great example of a subtle contemporary electronic score. (CD, clear jewel case, 11.00 €) Hollowing & Maor Appelbaum - Collaborating Torture (Topheth Prophet / Heart & Crossbone) One monolithic 54 min track of spectral ambience courtesy of Israeli musician Maor Appelbaum (Poochlatz, Vultures) and the late Matt Gibney (AKA Hollowing, So I Had To Shoot Him and owner of the Rectrix label). Those of you who picked up his collaboration with Chaos as Shelter which we released back in 2005 should definitely look into this. (CD, clear jewel case, 11.00 €) Barzel - Born to Destroy Amalek (Topheth Prophet) Second album from Barzel, fueled as always by the cause of militant Zionism. Whereas the first album felt like a historical overview of the topic (complete with sampled excerpts from documentaries and political speeches), "Born to Destroy Amalek" is much more aggressive, confrontational and personal, like stepping into the mind of a Hebron settler clutching his M-16. The emphasis on more ferocious vocals and heavy power electronics drives this point across, with samples of threats of violence becoming vengeful mantras. Beneath the Biblical references of the titles, the antagonism is real. This is the sound of unforgiving siege mentality, for those who can stomach it. Under the name of Cisfinitum, he has taken a syncretic approach to an often codified genre, uniting his formal training as a violinist at the Moscow State University with his affinity for concrete sounds and experimental structures. Past releases have shown a capacity to synthesize these factors at times while emphasizing the contrasts between them at others, sometimes over the course of a single track. In this aspect, this album follows the tradition faithfully. Tactio is the live recording of a Cisfinitum concert at the St. Petri Dom (St. Peter's Cathedral) in Bremen, on November 24, 2005. The particular (and as expected highly favorable) acoustics of this environment were consistently used not only as an enhancing effect but as an integral foundation for the performance, making it unmistakeably tied to its context. Presented in the form of six continuous tracks, the album is a contemplative composition of vibrant drones, reverberating bells and synthesized resonance, gracefully evolving from the celestial tones of its start to the tellurian pulses of its climax. This is a piece of work that is elaborate in its simplicity, and it's with much appreciation that it is presented here today. The beautiful iconic artwork by Evgeny Kuprienko further emphasizes the relic-like qualities of this recording. The tone is sorrowful and nostalgic, with the passing of time serving as a constant theme throughout the album (I don't think I'm imagining those tick-tocking rhythms). Definitely a step away from the more upbeat collaborations with Novy Svet and even more unusual in some ways than "La Boca del Infierno" ("Desnuda" will certainly mess with you), this is another excellent release from O Paradis that's rightfully been released by Punch Records. (CD, clear jewel case, 13.00 €) Erik Ursich - Electronic Diffraction Patterns (Punch Records) Setting aside the 70's synth LP vibe of his first album for another trip back in time to the raw electronic sounds of the 50's, Erik Ursich's new exercise in style is much less musical in nature and focusses more on the sounds themselves. Sounds of vintage analog synthesizers which come across as an homage to Louis and Bebe Barron's ground-breaking soundtrack to "Forbidden Planet", with melody and rhythm shunned in favor of texture, timbre and atonality over the course of this album's 5 long tracks. Highly recommended to those into early synth experimentation and bleeps and bloops. The CD includes a video which can be viewed on PCs. (CD, 6-panel digipak, 12.00 €) Kryptogen Rundfunk & Hladna - Rokton & Formanta (Zhelezobeton) Label info: "Hladna and Kryptogen Rundfunk - behind these names stand two St. Petersburg-based musicians playing experimental noise music. They both nourish a tender passion for old electronic instruments and often use them at their concerts and on recordings. One warm sunny day they gathered and decided to play on two analogue rhythm synthesizers "Rokton" and "Formanta". These are actually two identical instruments which were produced in the Soviet Union by two different factories. Each of them is the "brain" for electronic drum-kit, but can also be used separately - as a multi-channel tone-noise-generator or rhytm-machine. Kryptogen Rundfunk used his device smoothly, evenly and calmly while Hladna expelled from his more sharp and unpredictable sounds. Worth mentioning are Hladna's non-standard ways of making sound - on the last two tracks he opened the back plate of his synth and played not only using knobs but also getting inside and abridging contacts with his own hands (for which he was incidentally struck by the current a couple of times). Rejection of stylistic norms in the name of sound-craft freedom, deconstruction and irrational re-assemblage of musical material - that's what stands behind this term. This approach allows them to keep a child's purity and frankness in musical perception with the ability to send an emotional charge without using settled compositional forms. This disc includes the most song-like tracks of the band: crookedly recorded guitars, voices emotionally singing some nonsense in a mixture of several languages, and reversed melodies. This is a collection of all the tracks recorded by this mysterious band from the late 90's russian scene. The music is old-school electro-industrial with pumping bass lines, arpeggiated melodic loops and clanging beats, all mixed up with some samples to spice up the affair. With completely over the top titles such as "Swastika Man", "Illuminati" and "Nazi UFO Attacks Paris Nightclub", this is sure to be a hit with all the DJs in Neuschwabenland. (CD-R, pro-printed color sleeve, 7.50 €) Skincage - Things Fall Apart (Spectre) "Things Fall Apart" is the much awaited second CD by Jon Ray's Skincage, almost seven years after his highly impressive debut album, "Axon". Mainly created using an array of self-made and broken instruments, circuit-bent electronics and concrete sounds, the album does come across as much more somber than its predecessor, while thankfully letting that certain luminous touch still gleam through the haze. Along with Hollydrift and Brutum Fulmen, Skincage is part of those relatively rare craftsmen capable of truly bringing out the extraordinary from the mundane, of making objects "sing" if you will. A rewarding experience in isolationist sound. (CD, gatefold digisleeve, 13.00 €) Thermidor - 1929 (Brume Records / Thisco) Debut album from this Portugese dark ambient project, with a penchant for clear synthetic melodies and processed noises and atmospheric effects that brings to mind some First Law albums. Features remixes by Flint Glass and Empusae. (CD, slim DVD case with a mock mini-newspaper, color insert and two stickers, 12.00 €) N. - Memories From Before Being Born (Belligeranza) Produced using nothing more than two empty tape-recorders connected to each other, this is the sound of nothingness, hollow frequencies and flat electroencephalograms. This album is presented over the course of 27 short tracks and fulfils its conceptual promise by straining raw, scum-drenched bass tones to oblivion. (CD, jewel case, 12.00 €)

This 29-min debut solo release is a wonderfully strange collage of sputtering noise, acoustic pop music and bird songs. Overall, this is an imaginative piece of work that definitely warrants keeping an eye out his future releases. The presentation is equally unusual, as the CD-R comes inside a sealed envelope addressed to Mattias Frisk with a hand-written letter in Swedish and a color insert. (CD-R in sealed envelope, 7.50 €) Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar - Skrankverk (Dystonia EK) New album from this Swedish band whose previous one was released on SNSE. Clanging, scraping and squeaking metal resonates over the hum of flooded machine rooms and the gas bursts from rusting pneumatic tubes. This is the sound of toiling poltergeists, endlessly repeating the rituals of an industrial wasteland's cargo cult. With Luasa Raelon, Reed uses deep-frozen synthesizers and electronics to construct pitch-black sonic sculptures that evoke lost cities carved from obsidian whose masterless machines have been left to grind on into eternity, or descents into stygian pits whose bottoms cannot be gauged. It was actually through Aidan Baker that we found out about Ben's Light Of Shipwreck project; knowing that we're fanatics for "heavy ambient" sound, Light Of Shipwreck was recommended as something we should check out. At first expecting something more along the lines of the kind of floating ambient rumble that marks so much of my favorite Baker solo stuff, I was pleasantly surprised by how percussive the tracks I heard online from LOS were, the dense, ominous feedback drones and heavy rumbling ur-riffs floating freely over a mechanistic tribal-rhythm freakout. We ended up gettin g in touch with Ben from Light Of Shipwreck and it turned out that he had a nearly hour-long disc that he wanted to have released through our Crucial Bliss imprint, and here we are: a three-track full length of rich, crushing power-ambient, titled From The Idle Cylinders, a reference to the American Objectivist poet George Oppen whose work is a consistent influence on Light Of Shipwreck's imagery, with huge slabs of resonant sheet metal shimmering in an ocean of heavenly feedback and reverberating guitar drone, and surges of droning tribal Krautrock percussion floating along with distorted ambient doom power chords and washed out vocal cord bliss, each track running upwards of 20 minutes in length. A totally breathtaking piece of music, like Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Can, and Earth swirled together into an austere, hypnotizing heavy-trance masterpiece. And this 2-track, hour long excursion into deep feedback bliss is stunningly beautiful. Split into two halves, "Interior" and "Anterior", Baker once again taps into his visions of the bodycage using only his electric guitar, performed and recorded live; the result is an evocative feedback-heavy dronescape drifting with the gritty hum of the amplifier, layers of shimmering, chiming feedback, crushing distorted ambient dirge that borders on Sunn O)))-levels of sonic weight, and shafts of elegiac melody breaking through the stormclouds of Baker's cavernous rumbling like rays of sunlight. Year Of No Light bring an amazing set of songwriting chops to the 10 songs that make up 'Nord', a heavy, chugging metallic monster that channels both gloomy atmospherics reminiscent of The Cure, and crushing Neurosis-inspired dirgecore, heavy, raw, and lumbering, but at times extremely beautiful and epic. While heavily influenced by a number of CMI acts (the Protagonist in particular) and not particularly distinguishable from its peers in this field, the album is rather well executed and efficient at what it sets out to achieve. (CD, oversized 3-panel color sleeve, 12.00 €) Silence & Strength - Opus Paracelsum (Eastern Front) Label info: "Second full-length esoteric dark ambient/alchemical experimental opus full of weird sounds composed by Silence & Strength. The album is inspired by life and works of Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, medieval Swiss physician, chemist, alchemist and one of the fathers of modern medicine who developed his own system of medicine and philosophy." (CD, clear jewel case, 12.00 €) Brutum Fulmen - Flesh Of The Moon (Crippled Intellect Productions) First full-length CD from Brutum Fulmen, Jeff Wrench's main experimental sound project. While there is no shortage of sound artists who rely on field recordings for their material and delve into the often dessicated fields of musique concr�te, few that I'm aware of have managed to turn them into such lush electro-acoustic compositions that actually warrant repeated listenings. The 10 tracks gathered here are carefully crafted from the sounds of old manual typewriters, hinges, metal, feedback, and other common and uncommon objects, and the booklet provides an extensive list of these sources which is always interesting to read as you listen to the end result.
