Aavikko - History of Muysic (Solnze Records)

Aavikko's music comes across as the bastard offspring of 60's surf rock, TV game show muzak and MIDI disco anthems. It's also entertaining and infectious enough to go beyond the novelty factor. This CD is a compilation of practically all of their non-album material, meaning tracks from singles, EPs and live, unreleased and collaboration tracks.

Messer Chups - Black Black Magic (Solnze Records)

Label info: "This Russian masterpiece twists you outta this world. Black Black Magic is Messer Chups most musical release. 50’s B-Movie soundtracks, the guitar at times reminiscent of Ricky King, Sci-Fi Horror ala Ed Wood, the erotique of Russ Meyer – all in perfect combination with Lydia Kavina’s (niece of Lev Termen, Theremin inventor) Theremin to mutate a sound so “retro”, that it sounds like the future.
The video for ‘Go Satan Go’ features Russian Playmate of the year Natalya Simakova, guaranteeing even more kitsch."

Kim & Buran - Kosmos For Children (Solnze Records)

Kim & Buran are strongly inspired by psychedelic Soviet cartoons from the 70's and 80's, and the CD artwork even features two of the evil robotic henchmen from "Tayna tretey planety" if I'm not mistaken (many thanks to M.M. for sharing this gem with me). Their debut release "Kosmos for Children" is a pleasant brew of retro lounge muzak, playful robojazz and cartoon music. It has many similarities with the above-mentioned movie's own score, including the bubbling sounds of Soviet synthesizers. Melancholic at times, upbeat at others, this debut release has definitely found its rightful home among Solnze's roster.

End - The Sounds of Disaster (Solnze Records)

CD rerelease of the album with 3 extra remixes by Messer Chups. The soundtrack to a spy movie set during the apocalypse. Rockabilly, surf anthems, breakcore and faux jazz are seamlessly collaged into track-sized pieces of manic glee, the sort that titles like "To Hell With Everyone" and "Good Riddance" hint at in a clear manner. No three-line blurb can do justice to this release.

Solomon Schwartz - Et Son Orchestra (Solnze Records)

Traditional Jewish folk songs performed as twist tunes, supposedly by the enigmatic Solomon Schwartz back in 1963. If this is indeed the real background story or a cleverly concealed side-project involving Solnze staff we'll never know, but this album is a gem of positively euphoric, joyous and catchy music. Mazel Tov!

Oleg Kostrow - Imago (Solnze Records)

"Imago" is a soundtrack to a theater play by the same name written by Maxim Kurochkin. The material here is composed and recorded by Oleg Kostrow, one of the two members of Messer Für Frau Müller. Pretty much indistinguishable from MFFM, the tracks on this CD feature the same combination of light-hearted lounge / exotica with playful Jean-Jacques Perrey-style electronics.

Moljebka Pulse - Sadalsuud (Some Place Else)

Label info: "Mathias Josefson is a sound-artist from Stockholm, Sweden, and currently attending the royal university college of fine arts. His main project is Moljebka Pvlse, which is an experimental music group that works with both electronic and acoustic instruments, as well as with field recordings and found sounds. What comes out is hypnotic and meditative soundscapes.[...]
The name Sadalsuud refers to a star of the same name in the constellation of Aquarius. The name comes from an Arabic phrase meaning "the luckiest of them all". Nevertheless the album is rather earthy-sounding, yet mystical and surreal, almost claustrophobic at times. The sound is vaguely reminiscent of some works by Nurse With Wound, Maeror Tri or The Hafler Trio, but carries the trademark Moljebka Pvlse feel. [...]"

Ovro - Gegendurchgangenzeit (Some Place Else)

Label info: "An exercise on aural pathworking. Cinematic isolationist dark-ambient soundscapes, very evocative... you are taken through rainy seas, soaked, shipwrecked, underwater, underground... and what sights you see, what beings you meet on the way is left for your subconscious to reveal. Deep listening for small hours. Sit back, relax and let your mind go."

Murderous Vision / Kuru - Blood-Brain Barrier (Somnambulant Records)

Label info: "A split effort by Murderous Vision and Kuru. Murderous Vision presents a homicidal narrative through the medium of death-industrial, placing the listener at a barren locale on the fringe of the city, in the playground of a killer amid society's refuse. The Kuru side of the split tells of a similar compulsion but changes the setting to that of a primordial wilderness where instinct supersedes logic."
