Ond - S/T (Inner Gravity)

Debut release from this American dark ambient duo whose memorable CD-R release on Somnambulant Corpse ("For Influence Blooms Of The Subtle Wing") some of you might remember. On this album the sound is bass-heavy, melodic and mournful, with some minimal percussion pacing some of the tracks. While the two longest pieces slightly suffer from being stretched out for too long with too little, that shouldn't detract from what is an overall solid debut.

(CD, jewel case, $15.00)

Augusta Taurinorum

Onirot - Augusta Taurinorum (Inner Gravity)

There's very little information on this one, so a brief summary will have to do. What you'll find here is a combination of cinematic (as in trailer-style sped-up sound effects) dark ambient and horror movie synth soundtrack. Despite minor production limitations (not everyone can be an instant Lustmord when doing sound design), there's a definite "demon in the cellar" B-movie charm to this. Pick it up and find out.

Deus Ex Machina

Onirot - Deus Ex Machina (Inner Gravity)

Final part of the Onirot trilogy. This time round the production is crystal-clear and the sound incorporates distant mechanical rumblings, footsteps and mangled drones into the mix. It seems the dank cellars have been left for desolate industrial fields, and the result definitely warrants praise. Well done!

Gegendurchgangenzeit

[mp3 ] [ mp3 ]

Ovro - Gegendurchgangenzeit (Some Place Else)

Label info: "An exercise on aural pathworking. Cinematic isolationist dark-ambient soundscapes, very evocative... you are taken through rainy seas, soaked, shipwrecked, underwater, underground... and what sights you see, what beings you meet on the way is left for your subconscious to reveal. Deep listening for small hours. Sit back, relax and let your mind go."

(CD, clear jewel case, $7.00, on sale)

Mysterious Places Of Dead Souls

[mp3 ] [ mp3 ] [ mp3 ]

Oxyd meets Sumad - Mysterious Places Of Dead Souls (Ars Benevola Mater)

Ethereal ambient from Slovakia with a somewhat baroque touch to it. Spacious drones are layered with melodic instrumentation and sparse processed vocal samples. Somewhere between Bisclaveret, Tabor Radosti and some CMI acts.

(CD, oversized cardboard sleeve, $14.00)

Nil Desperandum

[mp3 ] [ mp3 ] [ mp3 ]

Per Aspera - Nil Desperandum (New Nihilism)

Surprisingly glossy if uneven dark ambient from this newcomer to the Polish post-industrial scene. The better tracks tracks are built around deep drones and choir-like processed voices that succeed at giving the whole affair a stark cinematic tone that falls somewhere between Parca Pace and Band of Pain. Some specific pieces ("Crematorium" and "Shkiyat Hoolam") gradually incorporate samples of 9/11 witness accounts, Israeli news snippets and Arabic chanting and instrumentation in a fairly clumsy manner (the unintentionally hilarious homemade "jihadist death threat" is straight out of some cheesy Golan-Globus production, complete with a misnamed "Radaman" reference). Aside from that distracting break in continuity (which can still be enjoyed for its sheer tackiness), "Nil Desperandum" achieves what it set out to do in terms of quality ambient.

Phragments & Korinth - Mysteries Of The Greylands (Greytone)

Label info: "On this album, Phragments and Korinth have united into one monolithic entity, to produce a common opus. Orchestral choirs, dark ambient and ritual passages create a perfect cinematic journey over the mysterious Greylands, an archetypal and symbolic travel through the hidden side of the world."

(CD, digipak, $12.00)

Requiem for Abandoned Souls

Raison d'Etre - Requiem for Abandoned Souls (Cold Meat Industry)

Latest release from one of the key projects brought to us by the Swedish slaughterhouse. Magnificent and lush ambient that follows up perfectly where "The Empty Hollow Unfolds" left off. Mandatory listening.

(CD in clear jewel case, out of stock)

S36NZ-OKh - Dar (Ultra)

First album from S36NZ-OKh (aka Kirill Rozhkov, also known as T.A.U. and one half of Stalnoy Pakt). Narcoleptic drones with subtle shifting high frequencies. Like meditating in an electrical power station.

(CD-R, cardboard sleeve, to be restocked soon)
