Aidan Baker - The Sea Swells A Bit... (A Silent Place)

New 2006 release from Canadian guitar dronemonger Aidan Baker, with this effort being of the more melodic variety of his works. 3 long tracks of ebbing, swelling and crashing sound waves obtained through treated guitars, bass, drum machines and percussion. Hypnotic and soothing like the sea which sets the theme here ("When Sailors Die", "Davy Jones' Locker").

Aidan Baker - Exoskeleton Heart (Crucial Bliss)

Label info: "Following up his amazing Periodic disc that was issued through Crucial Bliss two years ago, acclaimed Toronto drone-guitarist Aidan Baker is back with Exoskeleton Heart, his newest entry into our ongoing Crucial Bliss series. And this 2-track, hour long excursion into deep feedback bliss is stunningly beautiful. Split into two halves, "Interior" and "Anterior", Baker once again taps into his visions of the bodycage using only his electric guitar, performed and recorded live; the result is an evocative feedback-heavy dronescape drifting with the gritty hum of the amplifier, layers of shimmering, chiming feedback, crushing distorted ambient dirge that borders on Sunn O)))-levels of sonic weight, and shafts of elegiac melody breaking through the stormclouds of Baker's cavernous rumbling like rays of sunlight. Aidan Baker is without question the North American counterpart to the Tuetonic guitar drones of Troum, and Exoskeleton Heart delivers some of his most massive, meditative, crushing, and beautiful subterranean drift yet. Hell, the final 10 minutes of "Anterior" is without questions one of the most beautiful things we have ever presented through this label, an angelic glacial melody that builds inexorably into a wall of blissed out fuzz a la something you'd expect from Aidan's drone sludge band Nadja. Essential. [...]"

Aidan Baker & The Infant Cycle - Rural Sprawl (Zhelezobeton)

Label info: "Canadian musicians Aidan Baker and Jim DeJong (aka The Infant Cycle) have used the "gentleman's kit" of modern experimenters for creating the compositions of this disk: guitar, bass, tapes, samples, feedback generator and thumb piano. The four album tracks correspond with the four seasons, the four states of the soul... [...]

The first two tracks were recorded in 2001 (and released on CD-R by the Italian label Blade Records in 2002 in a very limited edition), two others were recorded in 2005 and thus completed the natural cycle of this album."

(pro-printed CD-R and cardboard sleeve, $11.00)

Arc - The Circle is Not Round (A Silent Place)

Debut CD release from Arc, the trio of Aidan Baker (guitars, flutes, tape loops), Richard Baker (drum kit, percussion) and Christopher Kukiel (percussion). This results in a combination of the more melodic Aidan Baker pieces with layers of varied percussive instruments, giving the sound a rhythmical and live quality that works consistently with the ambient drones. Pleasant and soothing stuff.

Arc - 13th (Taalem)

Label info: "Arc is a Canadian trio comprised of Aidan Baker, Richard Baker (no, they're not brothers) and Christopher Kukiel. It was formed spontaneously in 1999.
Arc's music is based on drones and melodic loops created by Aidan's heavily-treated guitar. Add Richard and Chrisopher's tribal-ish rhythms made with various percussive instruments and you get the picture. [...]"

Concrete Belly - Concrete Belly [mn031] (Mechanoise Labs)

Somewhere between bedroom folk music, circuit-bent electronics and comatose drones, this mini-album brings together a little selection of tracks sent to us by this UK musician. The fragile melodies and shimmering guitar sounds might bring to mind some of Aidan Baker's releases, but the noisier riffs and more loop-based structures of these tracks definitely give them their own personality. Disarmingly touching music.

Fulci - Dead Lights Red Sky (Crucial Bliss)

Label info: "The first recorded offering from twilight-psyche dronerock duo FULCI. Deep, rumbling, and eternal speaker-buzz worship, wrapped around lumbering riffs drunk on cough syrup and shimmering distortion overload. Howling feedback mantras repeated ad infinitum. Major key rustic lullabies are reduced to primal string scraping drones that climb over mountains of echoing hum. Intensely melodic and repetitious, like SKULLFLOWER covering EARTH's 2 in an old, empty farmhouse. FULCI is Eric Crowe (formerly of Social Infestation, currently of Marax) and Adam Wright. [...]"

Melanchoholics - A Single Act Of Carelessness (MNDR / Deafborn)

Label info: "Building on the experimentations from their debut CD (with a mix of field-recordings, guitars, electronically manipulated sounds and spoken word fragments), Melanchoholics walk new paths by exploring several acoustic instruments (such as cello and accordion) and add various sources for drones to their gloomy mélange." Recommended for those who enjoy Magwheels, Aidan Baker and Troum.

Poochlatz - Cold Turkey (BlackGapDeathTrap Records)

Poochlatz is the doom-noise-drone project of Israeli noiseniks Rani Zager (Vultures, Lietterschpich) and Maor Appelbaum (Screening, Vultures, and a number of releases under his own name). With one full-length CD under their belts, they're back with this live recording of their more doom metal influenced material. This is definitely a nice companion release to the Lietterschpich CD, as it share some of the same rough howled vocals but with a more sedated doom influence added to the whole thing.
